On May 21, 2008, in the National Library of Belarus is open a book exhibition “Everybody is Different, Everybody is Unique” dedicated to the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
The world cultural diversity and its safekeeping is the urgent issue which is discussed all over the world. This is one of the UNESCO and the Council of Europe priority activities. The UNESCO 31-th General Conference which took place in November 2001, adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and the plan of Action. On May 21, 2003, was proclaimed the World Day for the Declaration and the Plan of Action.
Cultural diversity is regarded as a part of the heritage common to all mankind. Being the source of cultural exchanges and origin of new ideas and art development, cultural diversity is as important for the mankind as biological diversity is important for the nature. Therefore it should be protected for the sake of present and future generations and regarded as one of the main human rights.
The exhibition totals about 300 materials:
• books on the issues of ethnic and cultural contacts, translation and dialogue of cultures, national, cultural, and ethnic specificity, and national mentality of different peoples;
• research and conceptions of intercultural cooperation and mutual impact of different cultures;
• popular science publications on regional geography revealing ethnic and psychological peculiarities of particular peoples;
• textbooks on intercultural communications in multinational business environment.
At the exhibition are displayed materials on cultural heritage of Belarus and analysis of Belarusian people life in different countries and in different time. Belarusian Diaspora is a huge stratum of Belarusian national culture. This is an extension of the nation in the world, therefore it should be learned and used in the development of diplomatic relations and international contacts.
