On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (18191872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

In 2019, the 200th anniversary of the composer, included in the UNESCO List of Memorable Dates, became an exceptional event for the entire musical world. The anniversary date has contributed to a significant interest in the personality and work of the composer in different countries, including Belarus, which has nurtured an outstanding musician. A wide celebration unfolded in different parts of our country, and numerous bright initiatives were implemented. Our library also joined in perpetuating the memory of the famous countryman and, as part of the Republican action plan to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth, created a large-scale virtual project, presented at various venues and received wide resonance.

On the occasion of the countryman's birthday, the library supplemented the current project with a new section "On the 205th anniversary of S. Moniuszko's birth." It contains materials about all the initiatives that took place in honor of the composer in the last five years: an overview of new books and sheet music from the collections of the National Library of Belarus, lists of articles from newspapers and magazines, information about perpetuating the memory of the composer from 2019 to the present day.

Now everyone interested in Stanislaw Moniuszko's work can visit the page of the new section and learn about all relevant initiatives related to the personality and legacy of the composer.

The undoubted decoration of the updated project is the unique section "From the archive of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus", created due to the fruitful cooperation of the library with the archive of the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus. In the section you can see valuable documents: posters of Stanislav Monyushko's outstanding operas "Galka" and "The Terrible Courtyard", once presented to the Belarusian public on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus.

The section contains sliders showing copies of unique photographs of scenes from performances of the Stanislaw Moniuszko's operas. For example, some of the images show scenes from the opera "Pebbles" staged in 1975. Others give the opportunity to see photo fragments of the "Terrible Courtyard" – an opera that has been waiting for a stage incarnation in Belarus for a long time and was first released in 1952. Some of the images show famous artists in the images of the heroes of the musical work: Tamara Nizhnikova, Nikolai Serdobov, Mikhail Zyuvanov, Sofia Drucker, Nikolai Vorvulev and others.

Wise thoughts from the Fine Arts reading room

After reading the quote, I involuntarily recall the sunlight-filled art of French Impressionist artists with their positive attitude and amazing freshness of perception. When looking at their paintings, one feels a rainbow-colored, slightly blurred atmosphere, as if woven from a soft cloud through which pearly light pours.
