The final month of spring will delight visitors to the Fine Arts reading room (room 306) with a new exhibition dedicated to the May anniversaries.

December 2024 marks a landmark date for the entire cultural community of Belarus – the 100th anniversary of Belarusian cinema. The anniversary year has already started with numerous events: premieres of domestic films, retrospectives and film lectures at the Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema, the republican film festival "Kinovek".

The collections of the National Library of Belarus contain a real book chronicle of the Belarusian cinema art. Thanks to this, we are pleased to join the celebration of the 100th anniversary and introduce readers to the exposition dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding film director, classic of Belarusian children's cinema, storyteller of our cinema Leonid Nechaev (1939-2010). Whole generations of Soviet children grew up watching wonderful films directed by the director, including "The Adventures of Pinocchio" (1975), "About Little Red Riding Hood" with young Yana Poplavskaya (1977), "The Tale of the Star Boy" (1983), "Red, Honest, in Love" (1984), "Peter Pan" (1987) and many other films that evoke the fondest memories for many.

The exhibition in the art hall introduces articles about Leonid Nechaev, interviews with the master, memories of him, and also gives an opportunity to see unique documents – director's scripts of films by Leonid Alekseevich, with which you can understand the peculiarities of creating films, follow the storyboard, plans, angles and slightly open the doors to the creative workshop of the creator of children's cinema of Belarus.

On May 5, the 70th anniversary is celebrated by art historian, artist of decorative and applied arts, teacher, candidate of Art history Yevgeny Shuneyko. His name is widely known in modern Belarusian culture. An authoritative scientist, a talented artist, a sensitive teacher, Yevgeny Feliksovich hails from a unique Grodno dynasty, whose representatives have been engaged in artistic weaving for many years. It is noteworthy that the Shuneika masters possess rare weaving techniques – double and double-sided weaving, and the work of Eugene's sister, tapestry master Elena Shuneiko, is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus.

It should be added that Yevgeny Feliksovich is always very nice to see in our library: for many years he has been a regular reader of the art hall, which he visits together with students, future art historians, passing on their experience and teaching them how to work with a book. A man of high culture, encyclopedic knowledge, intelligent and sincere, he charges students and library staff with his invariably good mood, thirst for knowledge and curiosity.

The exhibition, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Yevgeny Shuneyko, presents his numerous articles on the problems of understanding the heritage of Belarusian artists in a European context, the secrets of Oriental art, the peculiarities of the artistic design of Belarusian textiles, and current trends in modern Belarusian art. We recommend you to get acquainted with the essays by Yevgeny Shuneyko "Praspecte Nezalezhnastsi" (2012), where articles about artists, famous Belarusians Ferdinand Ruschits, Czeslaw Nemen, Ales Rodin and others are collected under one cover.

The staff of the art hall congratulate Evgeny Felixovich on his birthday, wish him health and many years of successful creativity and teaching!

The next hero of the day went down in the history of Belarusian art as the founder of the most famous private art school in Minsk, the first teacher of two world-famous artists, stars of the Paris school – Chaim Soutine and Mikhail Kikoin, a teacher who educated almost half of the outstanding masters of our art. We are talking about Yakov Kruger (1869–1940), a master whose role in the artistic education of Belarus is no less significant than the role of the famous Yudel Pan. The artist himself recalled: "Barefoot teenagers came to my school many kilometers away, on foot, from towns and villages with a burning desire to develop their abilities." It is noteworthy that the teacher remained in the shadow of his students, but he was a talented portraitist himself and created a whole gallery of images of the Minsk intelligentsia of the turn of the century.

The exhibition dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the birth of Yakov Kruger presents articles, a catalog of works, as well as reproductions of the artist's paintings: famous portraits of Yanka Kupala, Yakub Kolas, artist and philanthropist Palmira Mrachkovskaya, portraits of representatives of the Jewish intelligentsia, scientists, self-portraits of the master of different years. At the same time, the sketches of churches, churches and synagogues created by Yakov Kruger during ethnographic expeditions in Belarus deserve attention.
