From May 21, 2008, to June 15, 2008, in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (second floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition “Courage in the Name of Peace” dedicated to the UN Peacemakers International Day.




This Day was established in 2002 by the UN General Assembly, and it is observed annually on May 29. On this very day the first UN peacemaking mission started its operations in Palestine (1948). This holiday was established with the purpose of honoring those who took part or takes part in the UN peacemaking activities to maintain peace and security and provide peace and stability in countries ruined by wars. This holiday is also the Memory Day dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives in the name of peace.


The UN peacemaking activities are based on 60 years of experience in the field of solving of complicated international and local conflicts. The UN is a universal international organization which disposes of effectual methods, both peaceful and military, of peace and safety maintenance and conflicts settlement.
The UN military, law-enforcement, and civil staff participate in several activities from disarmament to human rights monitoring. Today over 100 000 peacemakers from 115 countries participate in 18 operations all over the world. Their purpose is to provide favorable conditions for peaceful life.


The exhibition acquaints visitors with literature on theory and history of peacemaking, and its role as a sort of policy and the main instrument of international relations in the field of conflicts settlement.


The exposition includes the following sections:


• the history of development and implementation of peacemaking forces;
• UN activities if the field of peace maintenance policy;
• documents of regional and international organizations on peacemaking;
• peacemaking as a method of conflicts settlement;
• use of armed forced in peacemaking operations.


The exposition totals about 60 materials in Russian and English languages: books, periodicals, and UN mimeographed materials.


We invite to the exhibition experts in international relations and international right, military people, politicians, public figures, scientists, professors, students, and everyone who is interested in the UN peacemaking activities.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
