From October 16, 2008, to November 15, 2008, in the Belarusian Literature Reading Room (room 205) is open a book exhibition “An ardent researcher of Belarusian literature” dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Yanka (Ivan Vladimirovich) Solomevich, the literary critic, folklorist, researcher of local lore, bibliographer, translator, laureate of the BSSR State Prize (1976).




The exhibition includes two sections - "Generous talent" and “I.V. Solomevich’s life and career”. The exposition includes about 60 materials.

Materials displayed in the first section of the exhibition acquaint with I.V. Solomevich as an author of articles, reviews, and translations, as well as scientific editor and compiler of collected works.

In the second section are displayed materials on I.V. Solomevich’s life and career. There is displayed a journal “Termapily” (№ 11, 2007), where are published letters by Vladimir Dubovka, the eminent Belarusian poet, to I.V. Solomevich.

I.V. Solomevich participated in the development of "Explanatory Dictionary of Belarusian language” in five volumes (1977-1984), encyclopedic reference books “Yanka Kupala” (1986), "Frantisek Skaryna and his Epoch" (1988), encyclopedia “Belarusian Folklore” (2005-2006) in two volumes, and other fundamental works. I.V.Solomevich is also known as a collector of pen names and cryptonyms. He is an author of “Dictionary of Belarusian pen names and cryptonyms of the XVI-th –XX-th centuries" (1983). I.V. Solomevich has collected and decoded over 20 thousand pen names and cryptonyms that will be included into a new “Dictionary of pen names” that is to be edited soon.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
