From June 12 to July 30 in the International Organizations reading room (room 207g) the thematic exhibition “Yoga for Peace and Harmony”, devoted to the International Day of Yoga, is held.

This Day was established by the decision of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly (resolution A/RES/69/131) on December 11, 2014, and is celebrated on June 21 every year since 2015.

The draft resolution on the establishment of the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and approved by a record number of votes: all 175 states represented in the General Assembly voted for.

Such unanimous support is caused by the recognition of the benefits that the philosophy of yoga brings and cultivates for physical and psychological health, which plays an important role in the modern world with its growing pressure on the psycho-emotional nature of man.

The resolution noted that the health of the world’s population is a long-term development challenge, requiring closer international cooperation to improve the way people live. The resolution also recognized that yoga provides an integrated approach to the health and well-being of the population.

Proclaiming the International Day of Yoga, the General Assembly stressed that the striving for harmony practiced by this doctrine helps to overcome stress, reduces aggression and instils mutual respect. In its turn it contributes to the formation of the world both around man and within society.

The General Assembly proposed to all UN states to celebrate a new memorable day in accordance with national traditions in order to expand the public’s knowledge of the benefits of yoga.

On the International Day of Yoga open classes are held in parks and squares, attracting the attention of people. There are organized seminars, forums, conferences, educational lectures.

On the International Day of Yoga In Minsk the Embassy of India organizes a sports festival in the Gorky Central Children's Park. Classes are taught by certified specialists from India and professional instructors of the Minsk yoga schools. Anyone can participate in them, regardless of age and level of fitness.

The annual celebration of the International Day of Yoga has become another date when the adherents of this doctrine can gather, share experiences, conduct joint classes and master classes.

The exhibition presents more than 70 publications in Russian and English: books, periodicals, brochures, booklets.

The exhibition includes the following thematic sections:

  • Everything about yoga: history, theory, philosophy.
  • Yoga for all: simple exercises for every day.
  • Yoga and health.
  • Mudras: yoga for fingers.
  • Yoga breathing, yoga psychology.
  • Yoga and meditation.

The exhibition will be useful to everyone who is interested in yoga as a method of spiritual development and physical improvement, philosophy and psychology of yoga, as well as those who are interested in various aspects of practical yoga and a healthy lifestyle.
