The exhibition “Word and Beyond” dedicated to the 180th anniversary of M.P. Mussorgsky is held from March 14th to May 8th in the Music and Audiovisual documents reading room (room 305).

The well-known Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839–1881) considered contemporary music to be younger sister to literature and plastic arts. For him poetry was equal to music, but the artistic content of the poetic word in his musical works is not precisely defined, the composer is above and outside the word. Creativity is permeated by the links of this parallel: text and music.

Contemporaries of M. Mussorgsky considered his work as innovative. However, the author himself said that his music does not go beyond its limits, it only expands its own territory. The composer stepped over the stylistic frontiers of his time and seemed to have entered the twentieth century of music, having “predicted” his features and development trends.

The exhibition present more than 80 documents. Its main part consists of music editions of works by the composer, including vocal cycles “Songs and Dances of Death”, “The Nursery”, a cycle of piano pieces “Pictures at an Exhibition”, romances and songs based on lyrics by A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, V. Kurochkin, N. Nekrasov, A. Koltsov, etc.

From the biographic editions by different authors, as well as publications in periodicals, you can get information about the life and work of the composer.

The exhibition includes audio recordings of famous works by M. Mussorgsky: the operas : opera “Khovanshchina”, “Boris Godunov”, “The Fair at Sorochyntsi”, scenes from “The Marriage” opera, songs, romances, etc.

The opening hours of the exhibition corresponds to the library’s opening hours.
Entrance to the exhibition is available by the library ticket or ticket of the library's social and cultural center.
