The Artists of Vitebsk Region, a new local history project, is available in the National Library’s virtual reading room.

The project, developed by the staff of Vitebsk Regional Library named after Lenin, focuses on the life and work of modern artists and art historians, members of Vitebsk regional branch of the Belarusian Union of Artists, who are followers of the world-famous Vitebsk Art School.

The project is timed to more than significant events, which took place one hundred years ago. In 1917, Mark Chagall arrived in Vitebsk as an authorized representative of the Arts Board of Vitebsk Province. In the same year, suprematist Kazimir Malevich arrived. In 1919, Vitebsk People’s Art School opened to give the world many famous artists. The town of Vitebsk started to transform into one of the world's largest laboratories of modern art, architecture and design. And the concepts of “Vitebsk Art School”, “Vitebsk Renaissance” and “Vitebsk Avant-Garde” still attract researchers from all over the world.

The Artists of Vitebsk Region project reflects the achievements of the modern Vitebsk Art School. The information provided by the website is grouped into two principal categories, “Artchronograph” (the history of the formation and evolution of art in Vitebsk land) and “Portfolio”, which gathers personal information about more than 100 artists. The latter is divided into several sections: “Biography”, “Bibliography”, “Exhibitions”, “Gallery”, “Works” and "Photo Album".

With this local lore project, you will discover many amazing facts about Vitebsk and Vitebsk Art School, which is one of the brightest phenomena of Belarusian and world’s art.
