The thematic book exhibition “UNESCO and Belarus: 65 Years of Successful Cooperation” dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the accession of Belarus to UNESCO is held in the Official Documents department (2nd floor, room 207) from May 7 to June 12.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency in the UN system that promotes peace, poverty eradication, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication and information.

UNESCO was created at the United Nations Conference held in November 1945 in London. The Constitution of UNESCO was signed on November 16, 1945 and entered into force on November 4, 1946 after its ratification by 20 states. The organization currently unites 195 member states. Its headquarters is located in Paris, France.

UNESCO is working on creation conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples based on respect for common values. All of the strategies, programs and activities of UNESCO are based on the specific objectives of the international community, the internationally accepted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.

The main activities of UNESCO are presented in five program sectors: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information.

The Republic of Belarus became a member of UNESCO on May 12, 1954. As stipulated by the Constitution of the organization, Belarus has a National Commission for UNESCO, designed to implement UNESCO projects within the country, involve government and non-governmental organizations in the organization’s programs, establish contacts with foreign partners.

UNESCO is an important partner of Belarus in solving problems in the socio-cultural sphere, as well as a unique platform for promoting achievements in the field of culture, science, education and information technologies, for promotion of the state’s foreign policy initiatives and development of mutually beneficial bilateral contacts.

The Republic of Belarus attaches great importance to cooperation with UNESCO, takes an active position in the governing and subsidiary bodies of the Organization, makes a significant contribution to shaping its policy and agenda, participates in the development of normative documents, initiates new directions of activities.

The anniversary of Belarus’s entry into UNESCO is a marquee event and a good reason to demonstrate the results of our country's cooperation with this organization.

The exhibition presents more than 100 documents from the NLB collections in Russian, Belarusian, and English: books, periodicals, UNESCO mimeographed materials, brochures, booklets.

The exhibition consists of the following sections:

·         UNESCO: general information;

·         UNESCO and Belarus: history of cooperation;

·         cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with UNESCO in the field of education;

·         cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with UNESCO in the field of science;

·         cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with UNESCO in the field of culture;

·         cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with UNESCO in the field of information and communication;

·         UNESCO and Chernobyl.

The exhibition will be interesting for specialists in international law, world politics, international relations, sociologists, employees of cultural and art institutions, students and teachers, as well as all those interested in the activities of UNESCO and the most important areas of cooperation of our country with this organization.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
