A book exhibition "Treasures and mysteries of the forest” timed to the International Year of Forests runs at the National Library of Belarus (3rd floor, circular hall) from February 24 to March 24.


On December 20, 2006, the Unite Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2011 the International Year of Forests. During the year a number of events will be held in order to preserve and develop forest resources.

Forests play an exclusively important role in preservation of biological diversity of the Earth; they exert a significant influence on weather, climate, the Earth surface and interior.

The forest is the habitat of about 3/4 of plants, animals and mushrooms of all kinds.

Forests are part of cultural and historical environment which has formed cultures and customs of different peoples, and also they are a source of work and material welfare for a significant part of the world population. The forest is the source of timber, food, medicaments and other goods.

In the Republic of Belarus forests cover about 40 % of the territory. Owning to a purposeful policy in the field of forest recovery and foresting, the area of forest cover is increasing and biological diversity of forests is preserved. The President of the Republic of Belarus A.G. Lukashenko says: “The forest is the national treasure of the Belarusian people, the national resource whose significance is growing from year to year, and the efficient use of forest resources is an issue of great urgency”.

The National Library of Belarus offers a book exhibition “Treasures and mysteries of the forest” timed to the International Year of Forests.

The exposition comprises more than 300 editions and illustrations: encyclopedias, reference books, photo albums, popular scientific editions, monographs, manuals, periodicals, posters and postcards.

Books displayed at the exhibition are arranged in subject sections:

  • The unique world of the living nature;
  • The mysterious world of forests;
  • The Belarusian forest reserve;
  • The fairy-tale forest;
  • Natural medicines;
  • The healing power of plants;
  • Forest residents;
  • The forests of Belarus;
  • Forests to hand down to our descendants.

The exposition is designed for specialists in forestry, students, tourists and everyone who is interested in forest resources.

The National Library of Belarus prepared the landscape festival and the book exhibition “Forests: efficient management, preservation and a sustainable development” timed to the International Year of Forests.

Every week from January to July 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
