From February 14, 2008, to March 31, 2008, in the Music and Audio Materials Reading Room (room 305) is open an exhibition “The Violinist Virtuoso” dedicated to the 330th anniversary of Antonio Vivaldi (1797–1848), the Italian composer.

Antonio Vivaldi is the world-famous composer, violinist, conductor, and pedagogue. He composed music for secular and ecclesiastical concerts, wrote operas for Venetian theatres, and gave violin concerts in Italia and other European countries.

Antonio Vivaldi achieved perfection in the creation of concerto grosso. The composer was inspired by the achievements of his predecessor Arcangelo Corelli, the Italian composer and violinist. Antonio Vivaldi established ternary form and soloist part for concerto grosso. He created the genre of a solo instrumental concert and developed a masterly violin technique.

Musical style by Antonio Vivaldi is remarkable for its melody, generosity, dynamics and expression, clarity, classical harmony, and emotionality. Concerts by Antonio Vivaldi inspired many European composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach who adapted about 20 violin concerts by Antonio Vivaldi for clavecin and organ. “The Four Seasons” is a set of four violin concertos which is one of the brilliant patterns of programme band music. Antonio Vivaldi was the first composer who introduced solo parts for oboe, French horns, bassoons, and other instruments. Instrumental concert by Antonio Vivaldi was a step to the development of a classical symphony.

The exhibition acquaints visitors with the music by Antonio Vivaldi: concerts for flute and orchestra D minor; bassoon and orchestra E minor; cello and chamber orchestra; “The Return” for viola and piano; organ D minor, and “The Four Seasons”. There are displayed as well small symphonies, arias from operas “Ottone in Villa”, “La verità in cimento”, “Griselda”, “Bajazet”, and others. In a particular section of the exhibition are displayed audio materials, and books and articles dedicated to the composer’s life and career.
