Electronic resources in the modern university library

On February 6-7, 2008, in M. Gorky Scientific Library, with the assistance of the Swedish Institute, took place an International seminar “Electronic resources in the modern university library”. Belarusian, Lithuanian, Russian, and Swedish librarians participated in the event. During the seminar were discussed the issues of digitizing of manuscripts, incunabula, and rare books; development of electronic libraries, and providing of the free access to electronic information resources.




During the seminar were presented and discussed lectures by Viveca Halldin Norberg (Uppsala University) “To leaf or not to leaf: Uppsala library experience in the field of digitizing”; A.Savelyeva, N. Nikolaeva St-Petersburg State University Scientific Library) “Electronic collection “Russian civic in the XVIIIth century (1708-1800) in St-Petersburg State University Scientific Library collections”, and Helena Havner (University Library of Gothenburg) “Digitizing issues: the University library’s point of view”. The experience of Russian and Swedish librarians in the field of digitizing of books published in the XVIII–XIX -th centuries is useful not only for university libraries, but also for national and public ones. Methods of materials selection and processing and development of digital copies secure and promote historical and cultural heritage.


Lectures by Peter Linde “Open Access initiatives in Swedish universities” and “From a local to a national portal of students’ works” and Anna Maria Petterson “New open resource - Search Guide” (Bleking Institute of Technology) acquainted participants with a new project with the use of which scientists and students can publish their own works in internet. This is a promising project in the field of electronic libraries development which promotes education and scientific researches.
The seminar was organized by St-Petersburg State University Scientific Library. Participants were acquainted with the technology of a scanning search and order of materials by the library’s image catalogue, as well as user service and library’s collections monitoring in St-Petersburg State University Graduate School of Management Library.


During the seminar were analyzed the issues of cooperation among libraries, experience exchange, and new methods of the development of a common information, social, and cultural space.

We present the updated virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region": on the 205th anniversary of the composer's birth

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

Dreams about Belarus at the National Library

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
