From 17 February to 13 March, the exhibition "The painting of a crucified soul", devoted to the 90th anniversary from the date of the birth of Belarusian painter and recognized People’s Artist of USSR and BSSR Mikhail Savitsky (1922–2010), runs in the Visual Materials Reading Room (room 307).


From 17 February to 13 March, the exhibition "The painting of crucified soul", devoted to the 90th anniversary from the date of birth of Belarusian painter and recognized People’s Artist of USSR and Belarus Mikhail Savitsky (1922–2010), runs in the Visual Materials Reading Room (room 307).

Mikhail Savitsky was a Laureate of State Prize of the USSR and BSSR, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Honored Artist of Belarus, holder of the Order of Francisc Skorina and the title Hero of Belarus (2006). He is one of the most famous painters of our country. His works are stored in many museums all over the world. For the Belarusian people, M. Savitsky is not only an artist, he is also one of those who embodies the conscience of our nation. His creativity is multifaceted. The works of this master reflect a profound insight into the phenomena of the past and present. In every phenomenon he sought and found a deep philosophical meaning.

The most part of his creative legacy is presented by works devoted to the Great Patriotic War. They are based on personal experience as the artist at that time participated in the war and was put in a concentration camp. The proposed exhibition offers to see reproductions of famous paintings, such as "Partizans", "The Partisan Madonna", "The Madonna of Birkenau" and others, as well as pictures from the series of "Features on the Heart".

Mikhail Savitsky during his career touched very tragic theme of Chernobyl. It can be seen reproductions from the series "Black true story" on the exhibition. In these pictures the artist describes human suffering and the pain of loss, human despair, a need to protect life from our own carelessness and negligence.

The manysidedness of his creativity is shown in the works which dedicated to labor during a peaceful time when a man appears in all his beauty even in day-to-day activity. Reproductions of pictures "Bread," "In a field," "Harvest" and others, which are presented at the exhibition, approximate everyone to the understanding of labor as the base of life.

Mikhail Savitsky was also a portraitist. This aspect took a significant place in his career. Every of his portraits are marked by deep philosophical insight into the essence of a man. There are reproductions of Kupala, Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Vysotsky’s portraits and of many others on display.

The exhibition contains more than 80 documents. These are books, magazines, postcards, posters and reproductions of paintings by the artist.

The exhibition is prepared to everyone who is interested in M. Savitsky’s creativity, and the history of the Belarusian painting in the end of the 20th century.

Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
