“The Basic Law of Belarus: from the Charter to the Constitution”, an exhibition timed to the 25th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, runs in the National Library (2nd floor, circular corridor), from March 12 to April 14.
Belarus is a country having a long legal history. By The Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of 1588, and the first Constitution, adopted in 1791, are the outstanding monuments of legal, literary and linguistic culture of the Belarusians. By the way, our Constitution, the first in Europe, is 4 years younger than the US Constitution.
The 25th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus is a landmark event in the country’s modern history. The Constitution is a sign of the development and free society in a European state. The Basic Law establishes the principles of sovereignty, being the core the entire legal system and a solid foundation for building a social state. The observance of the rules, laid down in the Constitution of Belarus, guarantees the stability and well-being in society, ensuring decent living conditions of citizens.
The offered exhibition presents about 70 documents, including publications about the formation of the Belarusian national state and the editions of our country’s basic law during the 20th century. The Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Constitution of May 3, 1791, adopted by the Four-Year General Sejm are presented separately. Publications about the constitutional law of Belarus are on display as well.
The National Archive of the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian State Archive of Film and Photo generously provided valuable documents such as the original oath and entry into office of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, copies of the minutes of the meeting of the working group of the Constitutional Commission of the Supreme Soviet and other official documents that are displayed for the first time, as well as a photo archive, consisting of thematic photos. Separate sections are devoted to the history of our country and modern life in Belarus.
The exposition will be interesting to a wide range of readers and visitors to the library.
