The National Library of Belarus congratulates citizens and guests of Minsk on the upcoming City Day and invites everyone to visit a festive book exhibition “My native city, my love…”.
Minsk is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Belarus with a rich history. Minsk was mentioned for the first time in The Tale of Past Years and it dates back to 1067, when there was a battle at the Nemiga River between the ruler of Polotsk Vseslav the Seer and the ruler of Kiev Izyaslav. Minsk was a centre of the apanage principality, province of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, governorate of the Russian Empire, capital of the USSR during its almost millenary history. Modern Minsk is the capital of the sovereign Republic of Belarus, modern European city with a developed infrastructure. Its architectural image, which was being formed during centuries, saved traces of different styles and epochs, peoples and religious confessions.
This book exhibition helps reveal unknown pages of the Belarusian capital life, get acquainted with the history of the ancient and modern Minsk, with its main streets and squares, architectural buildings, monuments. The exposition includes nearly 150 newest editions about the history and modern state of the capital, encyclopedias, reference books, guides, books about prominent people, born in Minsk.
The popular scientific edition The History of Minsk on Postcards and Photos is of a particular interest. The book contains photos of Minsk sights on old postcards and modern photos with the history, description, old and new names.
Everyone interested in the history of Minsk will find the book of L. Moryakov Галоўная вуліца Мінска quite interesting. The book is a real encyclopedia of the life of Zakharievskaya street (now Nezavisimosti avenue). It contains descriptions and plans of houses, names of inhabitants, their biographies and stories of lives. The edition includes manifold photos, documents, plans, the majority of which is published for the first time.
The year of 2016 in Belarus is declared the Year of Culture. The section "Spiritual life of Minsk" offers books about theatres, museums, festivals, and libraries of the capital. The gem of the exhibition is the book Big encyclopedia of the Big Theatre of Belarus, which was the winner of the Golden Scrolls award at the National competition "The Art of the Book" 2015.
The exposition is on the 2nd floor of the circular corridor and will have been demonstrated since August 24 till November 15, 2016.
