From February 5 to March 31, the Music and Audiovisual Documents Reading Room (room 305) hosts the Master of Choral Miniatures exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of V. Kalinnikov, Russian composer, teacher, conductor and musician (1870-1927).
Viktor Kalinnikov is one of the top masters of Russian choral culture. Being a great choral expert, the composer wrote for mixed and a capella choirs (15 spiritual choral pieces written between 1901 and 1911 were performed by the best choirs of St. Petersburg and Moscow). The pieces for the mixed choirs are varied in genre and themes. Among them are choral romances Elegy set to the lyrics by A. Pushkin, The Gentle Stars Shone upon Us set to the lyrics by A. Pleshcheyev; lyrical scenes The Lark set to the lyrics by V. Zhukovsky, Winter set to the lyrics by E. Baratynsky, and others.
Viktor Kalinnikov was one of the first Russian composers to write songs for children. Shadow-Shadow, Sunshine, The Crane, The Littel Lark and other songs can be rightfully considered children's choral classics.
Of great interest are the choral folk songs for four-part and two-part choirs (Play, my Bagpipe, Rise, Red Sun). Among V. Kalinnikov's sacred pieces, the most outstanding and frequently performed are The Cherubic Hymn, Mercy of Peace, and Holy God.
The composer's music is spontaneous, sincere, and soulful. His choral artistry is a valuable part of the Russian choral music heritage.
The exhibition presents V. Kalinnikov’s music sheet editions, audio materials, as well as materials about the composer's legacy.
Opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Entry is by library card or by the Social and Cultural Center ticket.
