The thematic exhibition "It is a wonderful theatre of poems", dedicated to the World Poetry Day, is opened in the International organizations documents reading room (207g) from March 12 to April 13.
This Day was declared at the 30th session of UNESCO General Conference on November 15, 1999 (document 30С/82) and is annually celebrated on March 21.
The main aim of its celebration according to UNESCO is the encouragement of the language diversity and support of endangered languages with the help of poetry. Besides, this Day is targeted at poetry development, coming back to the oral tradition of poetry reading, poetry teaching, restoring of the dialogue between poetry and other kinds of art, such as theatre, dances, music, painting, encouragement of printing and creation of a positive image of poetry in the media as a genuine modern art available to people.
It’s stated in UNESCO decision, that poetry can be the answer to acute and deep spiritual issues of a modern person, but it’s necessary to draw attention of the public to it. Celebration of this Day gives an impetus to organization of different events – international, national, regional and local – that support poetry. Nowadays many countries have traditionally on this Day literary evenings, festivals, presentations of new books, literature awards. These events are widely covered by the media, draw attention not only of a wide audience, but also publishers. New agreements on publishing their works is the best Poetry Day present for poets and the most anticipated result.
It’s necessary to mark the democratic nature of the Day, which unites famous authors with editions of millions of copies and beginning poets. They have an opportunity to share experience and positive creative energy at festive events.
The word "poetry" is from Greek рoieo – create, build. The author of the first real poem is still unknown. According to the famous historian Thomas Peacock, the most ancient poems-hymns were created in XXIII B.C. by a daughter of the Sumerian ruler Enheduan, who created a hymn that glorified gods and laid the first stone in poems creation.
Poetry is one of the most genius achievements of humanity. Only poetry, the greatest art, is able to express feelings in poems, world perception in rhymes, dream about future and reminisce past, calling to millions and at the same time being with a single person.
Every poem is unique, but it reflects a universal nature of the human experience, aspiration to creativity that doesn’t know any boundaries and obstacles, such as time, space and confirms the idea of humanity as one big family.
This is the spirit of the World Poetry Day that lies in the basis of the activities of UNESCO on consolidation humanity as a single community by preserving documentary poetical heritage in the frameworks of the program "World memory", and protection of immaterial heritage of humanity.
