From 20 July to 20 August, in the Music and audio materials reading room (room 305) there runs a book exhibition "A stream of soft and sublime sounds” dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Belarusian composer Gregory Surus.


The circle of artistic interests of Gregory Surus, the honored art worker of Byelorussia (1985), extended gradually. At the beginning of his creative way his attention was focused on instrumental music, especially piano one. The basic place in piano music belonged to a miniature presented in numerous plays, preludes, variations. The composer’s music for piano is included into a concert practice, pedagogical repertoire, in competition programs. They are notable for ingenuity, a rich musical texture, technical and performing methods, well thought-out realization of artistic design.

The exhibition presents Gregory Surus’ piano music: preludes “The Flaw”, “The Day Awakening”, sonatas 2 and 5, a rondo-fantasia of Belarusian thematic, a concert waltz “Mood”, a suite “Sunny Day”. The exposition includes the composer’s piano music for children. It is a concert for piano with orchestra “Youthful”, a suite for piano “School Day”, a school album “Home with the Piano” (pieces and ensembles), a suite “School” for piano in five parts.

Gregory Surus’ music attracts the audience’s attention by the breadth of interests to most different musical genres and forms. Music for theatrical performances is represented by musical comedies “Niesterka” (1975), “Judgment Hour” (1983). The master’s orchestral music, chamber-instrumental pieces, adaptations of Belarusian folk songs, pedagogical repertoire for violoncello, accordion, wooden wind instruments, vocal-instrumental music (cantatas “Foma the Obstinate”, “The Lyrical”, “Colors of Childhood”, a concert “Dazhinki”, a suite “Matchmaker”) are also on display.

Gregory Surus’ music attracts with its democratic character, sincerity and bright colors. His music is generally recognized, some musical compositions are winners of various festivals and contests.

The exhibition visitors will see musical collections of the composer including hand-written notes, and also audio documents from the stocks of the National Library of Belarus. The exposition is completed with publication from periodicals about Gregory Surus’ life and career and photos from his private archive.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
