The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus hosted an event dedicated to the 75th anniversary of UNESCO on November 16.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, was established on 16 November 1945.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency in the United Nations system that promotes peace, poverty eradication, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication and information. The Republic of Belarus joined UNESCO in 1954.

The event was attended by Mr Oleg Kravchenko, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Belarus, Mr Roman Motulsky, Director General of the National Library of Belarus, Mr Pavel Sapotko, Director of the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus, members of the National Commission.

Since 1957, the country's main book depository has been part of the depository library system for the worldwide distribution of the UN documents and publications. There are publications from six United Nations governing bodies in our collections. The most important areas of cooperation between our country and UNESCO reveals the virtual project "UNESCO and Belarus: The Values of Cooperation".

The National Library has prepared an exhibition for the 75th anniversary of the organization.

The exhibition presents about 25 documents that reflect the history and current activities of UNESCO, the most important areas of our country's cooperation with this organization. The documents are devoted to topical issues of socio-cultural sphere and art, general recommendations and concepts of development in the fields of education, science, as well as foreign policy initiatives of Belarus and the development of mutually beneficial bilateral contacts.

Also, you can find projects at the exhibition aimed to preserve and digitize the documentary heritage of Belarus, computerization and user information service, implemented by the National Library of Belarus with financial support from UNESCO.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to July 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
