On 22 August, at 16.00 the opening of the art exhibition "The Word" dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the Slavic alphabet will be held at the gallery "Labyrinth" (3rd floor).
The exhibition "The Word" explores the phenomenon of interpenetration of image and text in the modern Belarusian art. Since ancient times manuscripts have been decorated with intricate letters including marvelous miniatures.
In Belarus, the successors of the ancient art – calligraphy – are members of the Creative Union of Artists "LitArt" headed by professor, winner of the award "For Spiritual Revival" Pavel Semchenko whose works take an honorable place in the exhibition "The Word". The exposition also presents works Chinese calligrapher Li Zuo who jointly with the Belarusian artist Gennady Matsur will give a spectacular master-class on the art of calligraphy at the opening of the exhibition.
Among exhibits of great interest are shirts created by Vladimir Tsesler, canvases by painter Anatoly Kuznetsov, conceptual works by photographer Igor Savchenko, etc.
Art books, books released in a single copy, can be very interesting both for lovers of beauty and bibliophiles. New works in this genre will be presented by artist M. Borzdyko and poet M. Bashlakov.
As part of the art exhibition "Word" the National Library of Belarus will prepare a book exhibition "In the beginning was the word" on its third floor. The exhibition will include about 200 editions: books on the origin and development of writing in the Slavic lands, the history of the Cyrillic alphabet, on the monuments of the first writings and runes, as well as books and ancient Ukrainian chronicles. The exhibition will show publications that reflect the history of the origin and development of writing in Belarus, tell about monuments of ancient Belarusian literature. Books dedicated to Belarusian enlighteners are placed in a separate section.
The art exhibition "The Word" will run until 13 October, 2013.
The book exhibition "In the beginning was the Word" will run until 30 December, 2013.
