Exclusively for the International Mother Language Day, the National Library of Belarus has prepared a number of projects and events.

On February 21, leaders and representatives of diplomatic missions arrived at the National Library of Belarus to read prose and poetry by national writers dedicated to their mother languages. Excerpts from the works of national authors from around the world were recited at the library.

Book Museum offered to delve into the history of the Belarusian language at the Biełaruskaja Łacinka exhibition. The exhibition presents literary monuments created in Belarusian with the use of the Latin alphabet from the XVII century to the present days. The exhibition runs until June 30, 2020.

In the reading room of the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Department (room 164), a book exhibition Motherland Begins with a Word has opened. The exhibition presents the books in the Belarusian language including both the classics of the Belarusian literature and modern authors, as well as textbooks that can help improve knowledge of the native language. The exhibition runs until February 28, 2020.

Exclusively for the International Mother Language Day, the staff of the National Library conducted an educational excursion Outstanding People of the Motherland. Children from Gymnasium No. 14 of Minsk learned about the works of the famous Belarusian writer Uladzimir Karatkievich. In their turn, the students of the Akhremchik Gymnasium-College of Arts took part in a quiz tour. The children competed in intellectual games and learned a lot about the Belarusian language and literature.

A thematic photo zone with poems by Belarusian authors, words in the native language about the library and hashtags runs all day long in the Panorama Gallery (22nd floor).

For those who can’t come over to the Library on this day, we suggest paying attention to the building’s outdoor electronic light panel. At the end of the day, we will show the city videos with quotes from the writers' works and unique Belarusian words that distinguish us from other nations from 19:00 to midnight every 15 minutes.

You can join the International Mother Language Day without leaving your home. There is a quiz on uncommon words at the portal of the National Library. The Belarusian language is replete with interesting words, but some of them are not often heard in a conversation.

Happy International Mother Language Day!

Take pride in your roots and remember the melodic tones of your mother language, no matter what happens in your life.

Express your joy and love through language!
