On November, 25th, the Library hosted the presentation of books by Kazakhstan scientists published in the Bolashak University in Karaganda within the bounds of a research project “Karlag: the memory in the name of the future”.
Documents concerning the Karaganda work camp (Karlag) had lain for long years in archives stamped "top secret". Gradually, very selectively, archival funds started to open, and witnesses of those terrible events could present their memoirs to the wide public.
The project manager Nurlan Dulatbekov said that researchers had worked on this project for eight years during which they had analyzed a huge set of documents, studied a great volume of archival materials, and met with former political prisoners and prisoners of war.
Karlag is a reflection of the tragic destiny of all the peoples of the former Soviet Union. Karlag is the fate of thousands innocent people, so-called “people’s enemies”. Children and adults, common people and government bodies employees, talented military men and known creative persons became victims of the Karaganda work camp.
The project is of the greatest value to the history, culture and memory of descendants.
