From November, 26th, to December, 9th, a thematic book exhibition “It’s time for action: the world against AIDS” timed to the World AIDS Day runs in the Official documents department (room 207).
This Day was established in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHA41/1988/REC/1) and the UN General Assembly (resolution 43/15) and is observed annually on December 1st.
The purpose of the World AIDS Day is increasing the global awareness about HIV/AIDS and showing the international solidarity in front of the pandemic. This day partners from state and private sectors get the most real opportunity to distribute information on the status of the pandemic and to promote HIV/AIDS preventive care and treatment, and also take care of sick people in countries with high prevalence of this illness and all over the world.
The five-year theme for the World AIDS Day 2011–2015 is “Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths”. The chief matter of this theme is new generations without HIV.
The mankind has faced the HIV-infection for more than three decades ago. For this time AIDS has taken away more than 25 million lives, more than 35 million people have been infected with HIV, 16 million children born from HIV of positive parents have remained orphans. No country could avoid terrible consequences of this global epidemic.
Comprehending all the increasing complexities connected with HIV/AIDS pandemic, the United Nations created in 1996 the Joint United Nations program on AIDS/HIV (UNAIDS). UNAIDS maintains multi-year global projects on preventive care of HIV-infection and AIDS; assists the struggle for human rights irrespective of the HIV-status, provides aid to the countries all over the world by arranging trainings in preventive measures and supporting researches concerning HIV/AIDS and programs for the expansion of the international front of struggle with HIV/AIDS.
Only some years back the very idea of possibility to finish with AIDS in the nearest future seemed unreal. However science, political support and reciprocal measures with the participation of population have started to yield precise and tangible results. According to UNAIDS, in 2013 the number of new HIV-infections among adults decreased in 33 %, and in 52 % among children in comparison with 2001. The number of deaths caused by AIDS in 2013 decreased in 30 % in comparison with peak parameters of 2005. However for the solution of this problem it is necessary to do much more. Long-term investments, obligations and innovations are necessary to reduce to zero new cases of the HIV-infection and to achieve the complete eradication of discrimination and the prevention of death from AIDS.
The Republic of Belarus struggles actively against the HIV-infection as well. For the last years, considerable successes in prevention and treatment of the HIV-infection have been achieved. The State Program on HIV prevention for 2011–2015 provides for free access to complex medical aid, decreasing risk of transmitting HIV from mother to child, and allows to take preventive measures and to carry on programs on training and education in the field of the HIV-infection.
The exhibition presents over 100 documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe etc) in Russian and English: books, periodicals, the UN mimeographed papers, brochures and booklets.
The exposition includes the following thematic sections:
