A lesson on Handwritten Books was held in the Book Museum, February 24, as part of the Book Professors’ Club project.
The young researchers learned about the history of Belarusian handwritten books, looking through the facsimile editions of the oldest Belarusian manuscripts: the Turovsky, Polotsk and Slutsk Gospels. The children got an idea about the features and design of handwritten books. Particular attention was paid to the Bukvitsa (Initial) as an element of text design. As you know, the initial letter was large, richly colored with a variety of ornaments and placed at the beginning of the text. Initials used to be very often written in red, and hence the concept of "red line", the beginning of the paragraph.
The attendees got the opportunity to join a creative process and become followers of the handwritten tradition by making their own unique initials.
