On May 29, the Chess Championship of the Republic of Belarus (Top League) officially opened in the National Library.

The organizers are the Belarusian Chess Federation and the National Library of Belarus.

The event was attended by chairperson of the Belarusian Chess Federation, vice president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Anastasia Sorokina; head of the Department of Sports of the Ministry of Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus Eduard Babkin, Honored Coach of the Republic of Belarus, 11-time champion of the country, International Grandmaster Vyacheslav Dydyshko, first deputy director of the National Library of Belarus Elena Dolgopolova, as well as athletes , journalists and general public.

The intellectual tournament started with the drawing of lots, which, according to tradition, was held by the main referees of the championship, Natalia Popova and Vyacheslav Elberg.

After the official opening, the event’s guests could test their knowledge at an intellectual quiz. The most erudite participants received well-deserved prizes.

Talented pianist Violetta Iskandaryan performed some music pieces, having created warm atmosphere.

The championship will last ten days. The final is scheduled for June 7th.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
