The thematic exhibition "Tourism in the 21st century: sustainability and development” timed to the World Tourism Day runs in the Official documents department (room 207), from 6 September to 18 October.

This Day was established by the 3rd General Assembly World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in September and is observed annually on 27 September, since 1980. This date was chosen as on 27 September, 1970, the UNWTO Charter was adopted.

The purpose of the celebration is to attract the attention of the international community to the importance of tourism, its social, cultural, political and economic significance, showing the potential of tourism to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and overcoming the urgent issues of today.

The holiday is celebrated in most countries of the world and every year is held under a new slogan. According to the decision taken at the 21st session of UNWTO, official celebrations on the occasion of the World Tourism Day in 2017 will be held in Qatar under the slogan “Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development”.

Currently, tourism is the third largest export-oriented industry in the world after the chemical and fuel industry. It has become a powerful sector of economy, becoming a transformative force that improves the lives of millions of people. Tourism creates jobs and opportunities, affects GDP growth, increased trade and exports.

According to the World Tourism Organization, the tourism sector makes about 7% of world exports, one of eleven jobs and 10% of world GDP. Tourism is integrated into 400 industries and provides annually more than 1.5 trillion dollars in revenue, bringing hope and prosperity to millions of people around the world.

Tourism is a peace ambassador, a reliable means of improving mutual understanding among peoples, spreading knowledge about the rich heritage of various civilizations and ensuring a careful attitude to the enduring values of different cultures.

Today more than 1.2 billion people travel abroad annually, and by 2030, according to UNWTO, this figure will be 1.8 billion.

The state program "The Hospitable Belarus" for 2016–2020 is aimed at the formation and development of a modern competitive tourist complex and increasing the contribution of tourism to the development of the national economy. Thus tourism is gradually becoming one of the key industries for creating new jobs, economic growth and attracting investments.
