From July 7, 2008, to August 5, 2008, in the Official Documents Reading Room (second floor, room 207) is open a book exhibition “The World Population: What is Ahead?” dedicated to the World Population Day.
This day is observed annually on July 11 by the decision of the United Nations Development Program Board of Governors.It was first celebrated in July 1987 and was dedicated to the birth of the five billionth tellurian.
The World Population Day is observed in order to attract attention of society to the issues of demography and the world population.
Population upsurge in the 1960th aroused a serious anxiety. From 1960 to 1999 the world population increased more than twice and in October 1999 made over 6 billion. Although the rate of the world population growth has begun to decline, natality is today almost 78 million. According to the UNO, in 2050 the world population will be 9,3 billion. Population upsurge affects earth resources and environment, and often negates all efforts in the field of development.
United Nations Organization, Council of Europe, the World Bank, and other international organizations perform statistic and methodological work in the field of the world population in many countries. These organizations cooperate in the field of national statistic bureaus development, population census, and population rate forecasting. UN Population Fund (UNFPA) renders assistance to developing countries in the field of demographic issues solution. UNFPA office works as well in the Republic of Belarus where the government focuses attention on social and demographic issues.
Materials displayed at the exhibition acquaint visitors with new information on he world population, demographic tendencies, estimations and prognoses, as well as the world demographic statistics and the world population policy.
The exhibition includes the following sections:
- international organizations’ activity in the field of the world population;
- the world population programs;
- the world population, environment, education, and development;
- population and demographic tendencies; the world statistics;
- demographic situation, human and social capital of the republic of Belarus.
The exposition totals about 100 materials: books, brochures, periodical, and mimeographed materials in Russian, French, German, and English languages.
We invite to the exhibition professors, students and post-graduates, scientists, specialists in demography, sociologists, public administration workers, and everybody who is interested in social, demographic, and economic issues.
