A book exhibition "The world of grace and beauty” timed to the 150th birthday of Russian composer, pianist and conductor Anton Arensky (1861–1906) runs at Music and audio materials reading room (# 305) from 1 July to 6 September.


N.А. Rimsky-Korsakov’s disciple, director of Russian choral community (since 1888), manager of the Imperial Chapel Choir in Saint-Petersburg (since 1895), composer-lyricist Arensky worked mostly in chamber vocal and instrumental genres. He was among first Russian composers to create concertos for two pianos. Since 1901 he had given concerts as a pianist and a conductor both in Russia and abroad.

Anton Arensky’s lifework are: operas “The Dream on Volga” (1888), “Raphael” (1894), “Nal and Damayanti” (1903), music to Pushkin’s “Bakhchisaray Fountain”, ballet “Egyptian Nights”, two symphonies, two piano trios, and violin concerto. Besides, the composer created several chapel choirs, a number of romances, cantata “The Forest King” (based on Goethe’s poem translated into Russian by Zhukovsky). Arensky is the author of more the one hundred piano pieces united into opus cycles, and four suites for two pianos. The composer edited “The Guide to Practical Study of the Harmony” and “The Guide to the Study of Forms of Instrumental and Vocal Music”. Great composers Rachmaninov, Gliere and Skriabin had been Arensky’s disciples.

Arensky’s works are notable for sincerity, clear expression, mastery and finesse. His music is mostly lyrical and bears elegiac and meditative traits. The waltz from suite for two pianos № 1, piano trio re minor and “Variations of the Theme of Tchaikovsky” for string orchestra are most popular the world over.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
