From 31May to 1 July, in the Visual documents reading room (room 307) runs an exhibition “The spiritual is immortal” timed to the 150th anniversary of Russian painter, portraitist, master of monumental painting and lyrical landscape Mikhail Nesterov (1862–1942).

The art of Mikhail Nesterov is a bright and blessed world of Russia, and at the same time the world of hugeness and complicity. Having devoted his life to the study of Russian traditions, the artist created a unique religious painting, having no equal among his contemporaries. To him, the beauty of Russia is a lyrical, hearty beauty, the strength of a prayer, a calm light of belief and the power and heroic sprit of history.

The multiple creativity of Mikhail Nesterov reflects the people’s spiritual searching of before the Russian Revolution, the unique beauty of Russian nature, and the inspired activity of a man-creator whose talent is devoted to creation.

The celebrated master had always considered himself as an “eternal pupil” in the face of nature. To his dying day, he thirsted for learning and questioning it. Again and again, he repeats in his notes: “you must see, understand, feel, and this world will answer your most burning and passionate questions and will teach you much”.

The exhibition presents numerous reproductions of Mikhail Nesterov’s works including his eminent “Anchorite” and “The Vision to Young Bartholomew” that started the theme which had enthralled the painter for years. The Orthodox Russia, the life of saints and hermits, moral and spiritual perfection are reflected in the painter’s works “The Holy Russia”, “In Russia”, in church frescos, and also in the series of works dedicated to Sergiy Radonezhski.

The reproductions of paintings dedicated to the beauty of the Russian North and other landscapes are also on display.

After the Russian Revolution Mikhail Nesterov dedicated himself to portrait painting. The exhibition presents the most part of his portrait gallery. This is the reproduction of one of his most known works – the portrait of his daughter in black amazon against a background of a transparent autumn landscape, and also portraits of eminent scientists and artists – painters P.D. and A.D. Korin, physiologist I.P. Pavlov, sculptor V.I. Mukhina and others.

The exposition is completed with books and publications about Mikhail Nesterov’s life and work and postcards. The exhibition includes more than 80 documents.
