From 7 to 30 September, an exhibition “The outstanding figure of literary science”, devoted to the 90th anniversary from the date of the birth of Belarusian critic V. Kolesnik (1922–1994), runs in the Belarusian Literature Reading Room (room 205).


Vladimir Kolesnik is a scholar, writer, teacher, and a major figure in the Belarusian literary criticism and science in the 50–90’s of the 20th century. He is also a Laureate of the State Prize of Belarus named after Y. Kolas (1980) and Literary Prize named after I. Melezh. The author of over 10 books of literary criticism essays, documentary feature stories, polemical articles, reviews, books and manuals for schools, numerous publications. His works are related to wide thematic range: folklore, West Belarusian literature, Belarusian ancient literature, works of F. Skorina and M. Gusovsky, Y. Kupala and V. Zhilka, M. Tank and Y. Bryl, modern poetry, the works of some Ukrainian, Polish writers. In his research the critic focused, first of all, on literature of his native land, so he is called a teacher of poets and historian of literature written in the city of Brest.

Visitors can also get acquainted with the books of criticism Kolesnik: The poetry of resistance: Maksіm Tank and West Belarusian literature (Паэзія змагання: Максім Танк і заходнебеларуская літаратура) (1959), The Star Song (Зорны спеў) (1975), The Odyssey’s Sails: Vladimir Zhilka and romantic traditions in Belarusian poetry (Ветразі Адысея: Уладзімір Жылка і рамантычная традыцыя ў беларускай паэзіі) (1977), To know by life (Лёсам пазнанае) (1982), The Creation of Legends (Тварэнне легенды) (1987), All Human (Усё чалавечае) (1993), etc.

The documentary and fiction works The Story about Taulai (Аповесць пра Таўлая) (1964–1965), Galyn wood (Галын бор) (unfinished), which are placed in periodicals, present a special interest.

V. Kolesnik is one of the authors of the unique documentary book I am from fiery village... (Я з вогненнай вёскі…) (1975, in co-authorship with A. Adamovich and Y. Bryl). This works is translated into Polish, Russian, Bulgarian and other languages. The exhibition displays some translations of this book..

The personality of the researcher surprised by its spiritual wealth and diversity. He was an amazing photographer, tireless traveler; in his travels he always took pictures that showed his fine taste and skill. In the exhibition “The Diamonds of a Talent” is how the Photo Works V. Kolesnik, included in the albums Among those fields (Між тых палёў) (1968), Svіtsyaz (Свіцязь) (1973), etc.

The section "The Personality and the Faces of Artistic Personality" introduces publications, books and articles about the life and work of V. Kolesnik.

The exposition includes about 130 documents.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
