From 1 July to 30 August, an exhibition "The Great Patriotic War: history and law" timed to the 70th anniversary of Belarus' liberation from Nazi invaders runs in the Legal Information Reading Room (room 207b).


Minsk was liberated by Soviet troops on 3 July, 1944. Now this date is celebrated as the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus. In 1974, Minsk in commemoration of the citizens of the city in the fight against Nazism was awarded the title Hero City.

The Great Patriotic War brought dramatic changes in the development of industry, science, metallurgy, agriculture, law, etc. During the war, there was obtained enormous practical and theoretical experience. The entire state apparatus was rebuilt on a military way, and changed lawmaking and enforcement activities, occurred transformations in the legal system that allowed to unite and direct all forces to repel the attack of the invaders.

During the Great Patriotic War decrees of state legislative bodies continued to serve as an essential tool in the life of the policy of the Soviet state, served to implement its functions.

Provisions of wartime gave impetus for changes and additions to the Soviet legislation, which were often radical and extreme. At first, it referred to a legal regulation of issues related to the introduction of martial law, and in some areas where there is a threat of territorial acquisition, even a state of siege. It was a special legal regime providing for a significant expansion of the powers of the military authorities, expanding the range of cases, the jurisdiction of military tribunals, the use of extraordinary measures to ensure public safety, public order and strengthen the defense, as well as other tasks necessary to win.

The exhibition contains about 50 items of documentary and archival materials about the memorable events of the Great Patriotic War, people who have inscribed many pages of heroic in the annals.

The exhibition includes the following sections:

  • Documents of foreign policy during the Great Patriotic War.
  • Legal policy of the state during the war.
  • Partisan movement in the BSSR.
  • Occupation regime: myths and realities.
  • Operation "Bagration" on the liberation of Belarus.

The exhibition can be interested to historians and jurists exploring the experience of the Great Patriotic War, teachers, students and students of law schools, as well as all those interested in the history of the great war and victory.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
