The exhibition “The dominant idea of his life”, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Ales’ (Alexander Andreevich) Martinovich, has been opened in the Belarusian literature reading room (205) from August 15 till September 30.


Ales’ Martinovich, the famous literary critic, publicist, local historian, journalist, prosaic, laureate of the State award of Belarus (1998) and manifold literary awards, author of more than sixty books, contributes to the popularization of the national literature and cultural heritage of Belarus.

The exhibition presents nearly 100 documents, separated into four sections.

The first section shows literary and critic collections of books by Martinovich, where the Belarusian literature classicists’ and modern authors’ works are studied; late published and unpublished works are analyzed. The book Далучанасць (1990) opens the exposition, Пад небам вечнасці (1990), Дарога ў запаветнае (1992), Сувязь (1994), Дзе ж ты, храм праўды? (1996) follow it.

The writer has revealed the national history during a couple of decades through the famous Belarusian personalities, other peoples, who fruitfully worked for the good of our homeland. He created more than 300 historical portraits of outstanding compatriots, whose destinies he presented in historical sketches and essays, documentary artistic works. The book Зерне да зерня (1996) is the first of this series. У часе прасветленыя твары (1999), Элегіі забытых дарог (2001), Свечка на золкім ветры (2006), Птушкі з пакінутых гнёздаў (2007), Хто мы, адкуль мы… (2008), Успамін пра будучыню (2012) follow the multi-volume history of Belarus of persons.

The second section tells that Martinovich writes a lot about the Belarusian children’s literature, and is the author of stories and tales for children. The textbook for teachers of pre-school institutions Святло чароўнага ліхтарыка in two volumes (1997–1998) is of a particular interest, it includes creative writers’ portraits, review articles dedicated to the particular period of the Belarusian children’s literature and works of fiction – a bibliographic book and a chrestomathy under one cover.

The third section presents literary critic’s editing and compilative work, it includes books with Martinovich’s forewords and afterwords.

The last section includes materials that reveal his life and work, encyclopedias and reference books, collections of works and periodicals with Martinovich’s colleagues’ and friends’ articles.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

A new project of the National Library of Belarus is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War – "Reading newspaper lines with your heart. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders."
Every week from January to August 2024, the portal of the National Library publishes materials from newspapers of Soviet Belarus in 1944, reflecting the chronicle of news and events of that time.
