From January 14th to February 16th, the book exhibition “The Chronicler of the Epoch” timed to the 95th anniversary of the prominent Belarusian writer Ivan Šamiakin (1921–2004) runs in the library (in the circular corridor on the 2nd floor).


Ivan Šamiakin is the writer of modernity and at the same time the classic of Belarusian national literature, whose name is well known outside Belarus. His works are translated into more than 30 languages. For almost half a century, the writer had worked in the national literature. He is the winner of the State Prize of the USSR (1951), the Literary Award named after Jakub Kolas (1959), the State Prize of Belarus named after Jakub Kolas (1968), the Literary Prize of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR (1978), the Prize of the Union State of Belarus and Russia (2002). A street in Minsk and the Mozyr State Pedagogical University are named after Ivan Šamiakin.

The anniversary book exhibition presents about 200 works by the writer and also books about his life and creative career.

The first exhibition section “The creative heritage” features Ivan Šamiakin’s collections and singular works published in different years and translated into Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Kazakh, Moldavian, Czech, Bulgarian, Chinese, French, German and other languages. Among them there are collections of works; some editions of the writer’s first novel Glybokaja plyn’ (Deep Stream), (1949) which made his name known; the novel in five volumes Tryvožnaje ščascie (An Uneasy Happiness), (1957–1965) based on the biography of Ivan Šamiakin himself and those of his relatives; various editions of his most known novel Serca na daloni (The Heart on the Open Palm), (1964) which made the writer known and recognized. His other works such as novels U dobry chas (In the Good Times), (1953), Krynicy (The Springs), (1957), Sniežnyja zimy (Snowy Winters), (1970), Atlanty i karyjatydy (Telamones and Caryatides), (1974), Vaz’mu tvoj bol’ (I will take your pain), (1979), Zlaja zorka (Wicked Star), (1993) and others are also on display.

The second section “The course of life” is dedicated to the biography of Ivan Šamiakin, his friends and associates, and the writer’s milieu. Books by U. Kavalenka, the album Ivan Šamiakin: žyccio i tvorčasc’ (Ivan Šamiakin: life and creativity), (1982), the writer’s autobiographies Karani i galiny (Roots and Branches), (1986), Rozdum na aposznim pierahonie: Dzionnik 1980–1995. (Thoughts before the last station: Diary 1980–1995), (1998) and others are presented.

We present the updated virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region": on the 205th anniversary of the composer's birth

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

Dreams about Belarus at the National Library

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
