An exhibition “The celebrated Hollander” timed to the 405th birthday of Dutch painter and etcher Harmensz Van Rijn Rembrandt (1606−1669) runs at the Visual material reading room (307) from 15 July to 29 August.

The works by one of the most celebrated representatives of the Dutch baroque are full of aspiration to deeper philosophical comprehension of existence and human inward life with all riches of spiritual experiences. They mark the culmination point in the development of the Dutch art of the XVII century, one of the peaks of the world art culture.

Rembrandt’s artistic heritage is notable for an exceptional variety: he painted portraits, still life, landscapes, genre scenes, historical, biblical and mythological paintings, and was a matchless master of drawing and etching.

The monumental composition ”Danae” (1636) is a vivid incarnation of the artist’s esthetic views. This is a kind of the painter’s controversy with the greatest masters of the Renaissance: he opposes the spiritual beauty and the warmth of human intimate feelings to the prefect beauty of characters in the canvases of Italian painters.

The 1640s−1650s, having brought many severe trials to Rembrandt, open a new period of his artistic maturity. He creates biblical and genre paintings filled with quietness, warmth and intimacy, revealing the most subtle nuances of human feelings. The artist starts to paint more portraits depicting his closest ones. The elements of light and color, which were independent and partly opposite in the artist’s early works, now merge in a single interconnected whole.

In the final years of his life, Rembrandt creates his major masterpiece – the monumental canvas “The Return of the Prodigal Son” (circa 1668−1669), which incorporates all artistic, moral and esthetic themes of the painter’s late works.

The exhibition presents 120 documents: books, magazines, postcards and reproductions dedicated to the celebrated Dutch artist.

The exposition is designed for all readers who are interested in Rembrandt’s art.
