From 12 August to 6 September, in documents on art (room. 306) is open a book-illustrative exhibition "The artist-storyteller" dedicated to the 140th anniversary of Russian painter, graphic artist, illustrator and master of theatrical-decorative painting Ivan Bilibin.


The world of fairy tales had long been a part of the Russian art and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists. The tale, created by the centuries-old wisdom of the people, helped to grasp the simple and eternal truths disappearing in the bustle of everyday life. The creativity of Ivan Bilibin is a prime example of an embodiment of Russian antiquity. The name of the artist is associated with the formation of book graphics as an independent art, and his works had allowed art historians to talk about a special, totally unique "Bilibin’s style", representing a unique interpretation of the epic and fantastic images.

Ivan Bilibin (1876–1942) was a multi-personality, combining many talents and skills. He left a significant legacy not only in the field of book illustration, but also stenography, theatrical decorative and monumental painting, applied and magazine graphics, landscape and portrait genre. The master’s works attract with the wealth of ideas, festively patterned drawings, oriental motifs, jewelry pieces, and the impeccable lines for which the artist received the humorous nickname Ivan the Iron Hand.

The offered exhibition presents Ivan Bilibin’s poetic and colorful illustrations by to the Russian folk tales The Frog Princess, The Feather of Finist the Falcon, The White Duck, Maria Morevna; illustrations to Pushkin’s fairytales The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, The Tale of the Golden Cockerel; graphic illustrations to Lermontov’s poem The Song about Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich; sketches of scenery and costumes for operas by Russian composers.

The exposition also features publications about the artist’s life and career, his letters and articles, and memoirs of his contemporaries and disciples.

More than 50 documents: reproduction albums, books, postcards and articles are on display.

On May 5, the 205th anniversary of the birth of Stanislaw Moniuszko (1819–1872), the world-famous composer and conductor, our countryman, who made a significant contribution to the formation of Belarusian musical culture, is celebrated. By this date, the National Library of Belarus has updated the already existing virtual project "Stanislaw Moniuszko. Musical romantic from Minsk region", created five years ago, and now replenished with new unique materials.

On April 25, the National Library of Belarus hosted the opening of the exhibition "Dreams about Belarus", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders and the 85th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich.
