From August 10, 2009, to September 13, 2009, in the Official Documents Department (the second floor, room 207) is open a book exhibition “Slavery in the XXI century: causes of the phenomenon and countermeasures”.

The exhibition is dedicated to the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The event is observed annually on August 23 on recommendation of the 150th session of the UNESCO Executive Council in memory of insurrection on Haiti in 1791 that initiated the abolition of slavery.

Being one of the darkest and most tragic pages in human history, slavery is officially prohibited world over.Mauritania became the last country to prohibit use of slave labor in 1981 году. However, slavery still exists and is widespread even in democratic states.

“New slave-trade” has become one of burning issues of the modern world community. The modern forms of slavery are slave labor, domestic slavery, debt slavery, use of people as organ donors, forced marriage, forced pregnancy, fake adoption, human traffic and sexual slavery. As a rule, women and children, refugees and migrants are most vulnerable and often become victims of slave-trade and exploitation. Thus the exhibition dedicated to one of the most dangerous problems of the modern world is very important.

The exhibition acquaints with studies of the phenomenon of slavery and human traffic, international legislation and common efforts of UNO, European Union, OSCE, and Council of Europe in the field of the fight against the issue.

The exhibition reveals the following issues: origins, forms and essence of slavery and slave-trade in the world; the modern forms of slavery; international legislation in the field of the fight against slavery and slave-trade; international cooperation for the fight against slavery and human traffic, the Republic of Belarus against trafficking.

About 100 documents of international organizations are displayed at the exposition: books, brochures, mimeographed materials, and periodicals in Russian, English, French and German languages.

The exhibition is designed for representatives of law-enforcement bodies, judges, lawyers, professors and students and everyone who is interested in the issues of the fight against the international human traffic.
