From 30 May to 15 July, the exhibition "Parents and children: responsibility, trust, love " dedicated to World Parents Day runs in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (room 207g).

This day was proclaimed at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly on 17 September, 2012 (resolution A/RES/66/292). It has been annually celebrated on 1 June since 2013.

The purpose of the holiday is to remind people of the world about universal values , protect and adopt these values as the basis of a strong and moral family.

Parents in all parts of the world, irrespective of their racial, religious, cultural and national identity, are primary guardians and teachers of their children, preparing them for a happy, full and productive life. Parents are the core of the family and the basis of society. Children’s experience got in their relationship with their parents is fundamental to the whole of their subsequent life. It is vital for a child to feel parents’ love. Without food he can’t survive, as well as without love and acceptance he can’t become a complete person. Parents are responsible for the education and protection of children, for that their full and harmonious development of their personality certainly happen in a family environment and in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.

Mothers play a crucial role in the family, which is the key to social cohesion and unity. Child-bearing and giving birth is often a difficult challenge. Women feel neither the incomparable happiness when they give a new life, maternal instinct is a powerful force that connects the mother and her child. Often risking their lives, women are ready to give birth to their child. Mother, being with a child in his first years all the time, is a major factor in shaping children’s awareness and perception of the world.

The educational role of the father and his moral influence is increased only with the maturation of the child. The family only with the positive active involvement of fathers in the development of their children has highly moral, happy atmosphere and in this case children grow healthy and socially adapted.

Many men find it difficult to take his father’s duties, and it almost always causes irreparable damage to families and, inevitably, the whole society. All this point out the urgent and widespread need for a positive example of both parents.

Women and men alike need greater government support to be able to combine work and family responsibilities. Family created on the principles of recognition of equality between men and women will contribute to the creation of a more stable and productive society.

The UN General Assembly calls on to join the celebration of Parents’ Day to all states, members of the United Nations, and to celebrate it "within the comprehensive partnership with civil society, attracting young people and children".

The exhibition contains more than 60 documents: books, pamphlets, periodicals, mimeographed materials. Most part of the exhibition are documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, Council of Europe) in Russian and English languages.

The exhibition includes the following sections:

  • Institution of family in the era of social change.
  • Women in the family: marriage, motherhood and career.
  • Educational role of the father in the family.
  • Parents and children.
  • Family in Belarusian society: realities and prospects.
