From 22 August to 30 December, an exhibition "In the beginning was the Word..." dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the Slavic alphabet runs at the National Library of Belarus (3rd floor, circular corridor).

In the early Middle Ages, one of the most significant events and a turning point in the national culture of the East Slavic peoples was a christening of Russia and the emergence of ancient Slavic writing (alphabet) on its basis. It was a moment that started a new, truly civilized period of spiritual culture and education of the Slavic peoples, their rapid incorporation into the European literary-historical and cultural process.

The book exhibition of the National Library of Belarus "In the beginning was the Word" including about 200 publications consists of two sections.

The first section "The Slavic world: from the origins to the future" contains books that show the origin and development of writing in the Slavic lands. Books on the history of the Cyrillic alphabet and the first educators and the saints Cyril and Methodius take the main part of the exhibition. It was these saints who became the founders of the new Christian culture and literature in the lands of ancient Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

There are on display book editions of Old-Russian and Ukrainian chronicles. Books about writing monuments that appeared before the Cyril and Methodius period and runes, the magic alphabet of Northern Europe, are also presented to the public attention.

The second section "The Holiday of the Belarusian Written Language" includes publications related to the history of the emergence and development of writing in Belarus, as well as to the monuments of ancient Belarusian literature. In particular, the exposition contains a lot of information on Belarusian educators: Francysk Scorina, Simeon of Polotsk, Sofia Slutskaya, Kirill of Turov, Euphrosyne, Symon Bydnyi, Vasily Tiapinsky, Ivan Fedorov. All these well-known figures are the pride of the Belarusian land. Each of these people with their wide-range activities and fruitful work in the field of education laid the foundation in the Belarusian national culture.
