The exhibition “Facets of talent”, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Russian composer and conductor Yuri Falik, runs in the Music and audiovisual documents reading room (305) from June 23 till August 23.
Wonderful facets of the St. Petersburg composer’s talent (1936–2009) were being revealed gradually – first, he was recognized as a virtuosic performer, then as an instrumental composer, a little bit later as an author of choir and vocal music. At the same time he was involved in teaching, and he was actively concertizing as a symphonic conductor.
Being a marvelous master, who possesses all kinds of the composer technique, and always being himself, Falik developed the best traditions in music, moving towards the clear, natural, simple and at the same time thoughtful side.
The exhibition presents more than 80 documents. The main part of the exposition is the author’s printed music, including – the comic opera Scarpan’s Tricks (after J.-B. Moliere) (1987), the choreographic tragedy Orestea (after Aeschylus) (1976), a Concerto No 1 for orchestra based on the legend of Till Eulenspiegel (1971), a Concerto No 2 for orchestra Symphonic Etudes (1980), Concerto for brass and percussion entitled Buffoons (1972), etc.
A particular place in the Falik’s work is taken by choir music. The exposition offers a choral concert The Poetry of Igor Severianin (1982), Liturgical Chants (1997), a concerto for soprano solo and chorus singing a capella Elegy (2001), Concertos for Choir (settings of poems by Marina Tsvetaeva, Boris Pasternak, Alexander Pushkin, Anna Akhmatova and Nikolai Gumilev) (1989), the miniature Stranger, with words by Alexander Blok (1976), etc.
