A book exhibition timed to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Belarusian composer and pedagogue Edi Tyrmand runs in the Music and audiovisual documents reading room (305), from 9 to 28 February.

Edi Tyrmand (1917–2008) was born in Warsaw, Poland. She graduated from the choral faculty of the Warsaw Conservatory (1938), the piano class at the Belarusian State Conservatory under the direction of Professor G. Shershevsky (1949) and the composition class under the direction of Professor A. Bogatyrev (1952). She was the first female composer to join the Union of Composers of the BSSR (1954).

Edi Tyrmand is an artist with a pronounced individual style. Her multi-genre work is based on the intimacy combined with a romantic expression and subtle lyricism. The "sound world" of her compositions is full of melodiousness.

The composer’s most significant works are cantatas, two concertos for the piano and orchestra, Toccata and three sonatas for the piano, instrumental pieces, choruses. The vocal cycle based on the poems of M. Bogdanovich, M. Tank, B. Dade, G. Lorca took a rightful place in the concert and teaching practice of Edi Tyrmand. The composer also created a rich world of children’s music: suites of and cycles of miniatures for the piano, choirs a cappella and two-voice songs for children’s groups.

The educational activity of Edi Tyrmand is a powerful component of Belarusian musical pedagogy. In her methodology of teaching, everything was subordinated to the disclosure of the artistic side of a work; her interpretation was always full of living human emotions. The aspiration for raising genuine and highly professional musicians was a basis of her classes. The Honoured Artist of Belarus, Associate Professor L. Tolkacheva, Professor A. Korzhenevskaya, Associate Professor S. Okolova are among her alumni.

The exhibition presents chamber instrumental works (sonatas for the violin and piano, pieces based on Belarusian folk songs and dances, pieces for an ensemble of folk instruments, piano miniatures) and vocal and choral works of the composer (cycles, songs and choruses with accompaniment and a cappella). Visitors have the opportunity to listen to the record of works of Edi Tyrmand, including choirs Evening, Winter Road, Autumn performed by the National State Choir of the TV and Radio Company of Belarus.

Also the exposition features articles and books about the composer’s life and career.
