From 15 March to 9 April, in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205) runs an exhibition “Charmed with the mother tongue” timed to the 90th anniversary of Belarusian linguist Mikhail Yevnevich (1922–2010).
The honored teacher of Belarus (1972) and laureate of the State Prize of Belarus (1990) М.S. Yevnevich belongs to the pleiad of scientists who devoted whole their lives to the mother tongue and left a remarkable mark on Belarusian linguistics. For more than fifty years, the scientist’s activity had been closely related to the school and the university, education and teaching of the young generation. He became one of the first recipients of the Francisk Skorina Medal for the outstanding public, research and pedagogical work in the field of Belarusian science and culture (1992).
The exhibition presents the researcher’s numerous scientific papers mainly dedicated to the syntax of the modern Belarusian language and the questions of syntactic synonyms. Among them is the monograph “Syntactic Synonyms in the Modern Belarusian Literary Language” (1977), the first in Belarus study of the system of convertible terms based on rich factual materials. The author’s articles published in collections and journals are also on display.
М.S. Yevnevich is a coauthor and a scientific editor of many textbooks and programs for philology students: “The Syntax of the Modern Belarusian Language” (1969), “The Modern Belarusian Literary Language. Lexicology. Phonetics. Orthography.” (1993), “The Modern Belarusian Literary Language. Morphology.” (1997), “Terms Papers on the Belarusian Language” (1990), “The Belarusian Language” (1991),”The Belarusian Language: A Manual for University Entrants” ( 1998), “The Modern Belarusian Language: Tests” (2000). These and other works are on display.
The exhibition features as well the schoolbooks “The Belarusian Language” for fifth-ninth year students of a school with the Belarusian and Russian languages (1963-1995), written by М.S. Yevnevich and his coauthor V.K. Andreenko which had been used in Belarusian schools for more than thirty years.
The closing section of the exposition is dedicated to the life and career of the talented scientist.
