A book exhibition "Africa: historical and cultural heritage” timed to the International Year of African Descendants runs at the National Library of Belarus (3rd floor, circular hall) from 18 April to 7 July.


The National Library of Belarus offers to readers’ attention a book-illustrative exhibition "Africa: historical and cultural heritage” timed to the International Year of African Descendants.

The offered exhibition reveals the centuries-old and multiple history and culture of Africa. Particular exhibition sections are dedicated to historical development, traditions and customs of the African continent and present books about the issues African Descendants have to face.

A particular attention is paid to the African art which includes various regional schools and covers different epochs. However, the African art is a unique historical type characterized by the integrity of stylistic features.

A separate exhibition section is dedicated to the mysterious world of Egypt. The Egyptian culture is rooted in millenniums-old civilizations and combines the ancient worlds and modern discoveries. Books about the legendary pyramids, the Valley of Kings, Tutankhamun tomb, Sphinx, Karnak temple and other treasures of Egypt are on display.

Africa is the home to countless tribes, ethnic and social groups and huge populations consisting of millions peoples. Some African countries house more than 20 different ethnic groups.

Actually about 200 million peoples who consider themselves to be African Descendants live in America. Millions peoples live in other countries outside the African continent. Proclaiming the International Year of African Descendants the world community recognizes that African Descendants are a specific group whose rights must be approved and protected.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
