There is a whole galaxy of specialists who, without exaggeration, can be called the creators of librarianship, whose names are well-known to many, and whose professional experience deserves special attention and respect in the library industry of Belarus. Among them is Lyudmila Gennadyevna, an active highly qualified specialist who has carried her passion for her favorite profession through the years and gives it all her strength.

Lyudmila Gennadyevna was born in Maryina Gorka of the Minsk region in the family of a military man. In 1959, the family moved to the RSFSR, to the village of Pervomaisky, Kirov region, where seven-year-old Lyudmila went to the first class of secondary school No. 2.

Having successfully graduated from the 10th form in 1969, the girl entered the Faculty of Library Science and Bibliography of the Minsk State Pedagogical Institute named after A.M. Gorky (now known as the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after M. Tank).

L.G. Kiryukhina's professional career in the State Library of the BSSR named after V.I. Lenin (now the National Library of Belarus) began in November 1972, when she was hired as a librarian in the department of book storage.

In 1974, L.G. Kiryukhina graduated from the Institute and received a diploma of "librarian-bibliographer of the highest qualification."

After four years of work, she was transferred to the Art Department as a librarian, from August 1980 as a senior librarian, and from January 1986 as a senior editor.

Lyudmila Gennadyevna was engaged in maintaining the reference apparatus of the department, processing art publications, organizing exhibitions and literature reviews. From the materials of the personal file of that period, "She performs any task with a soul and creatively, quickly and clearly. [ ... ] Being a literate, sociable, sincere person, she receives thanks from readers and enjoys authority among employees."

Excellent professional competencies and rich experience allowed L.G. Kiryukhina to head the department in 1987.

In this position, she made a number of proposals to improve and optimize the structure of special art collections. Under her leadership, the department began creating an electronic catalog of printed musical, visual and audiovisual documents and working on methodological support for this activity among public libraries of the republic.

L.G. Kiryukhina is one of the organizers of the experiment on aesthetic universal education of pupils, which was conducted among public and children's libraries in the period from 1986 to 1991. The result of this large-scale work was the creation of aesthetic centers at public libraries.

Successful management of the department's work, integrity in solving production issues and high efficiency of Lyudmila Gennadyevna could not go unnoticed by the library management. Since November 1995, she was transferred to the position of Deputy Director for Research, where she worked fruitfully for the next 17 years.

In this status, Lyudmila made a significant contribution to the development of research and methodological activities of the National Library of Belarus. Having comprehensive information about the state of the library industry in the republic, she skillfully analyzed existing problems, found optimal ways to solve them, was able to effectively organize their collective implementation and successfully predict the results.

L.G. Kiryukhina participated in the development of a number of regulatory legal documents related to the country's library industry: the law "On Librarianship in the Republic of Belarus", "Regulations on the Library-Legal Information Center", "The Concept of creating a republican information center on the basis of the National Library of Belarus under construction", etc. In addition, she has repeatedly acted as a reviewer of draft laws of international significance: "On the National Library", "On Public Libraries", the Agreement on the Interlibrary subscription System of the CIS member states and a number of other documents.

"People trust her and respect her. Without exaggeration, she can be called an informal leader in the library...," according to the materials of her personal file.

The construction of the new building of the National Library has become an important and responsible event for the whole country. Lyudmila Gennadyevna made a significant contribution to the creation of a unique architectural, construction, software and technical complex, in the process of transforming the library into a republican information and socio-cultural center.

Since 2004, Lyudmila has been Deputy Director for Research and Public Relations, and since 2011 for Research and Publishing.

L. G. Kiryukhina is an active participant in professional events of various levels. She willingly shares her experience with colleagues, and has represented our country at international library conferences more than once: in Denmark (Copenhagen, 1999), Lithuania (Vilnius, 2001), Portugal (Lisbon, 2003), Poland (Warsaw, 2003), etc. As part of the cultural exchange program in 2005, L.G. Kiryukhina visited Slovakia (Bratislava) as part of the Belarusian delegation.

Improving her professional knowledge and skills, Lyudmila Gennadyevna completed an internship in library and information institutions in the United States in 1998, and in 2001 graduated from the Faculty of Advanced Training of the Belarusian State Institute of Cultural Problems (now the Institute of Advanced Training and Retraining of Personnel of the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts) in the group of the reserve of senior personnel of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus. In the period from 2000 to 2004, she was a candidate of pedagogical Sciences in the specialty "Library science and bibliography", prepared for the defense of her dissertation on the topic "Public libraries in the socio-cultural environment of the region". Based on the results of this work, a monograph of the same name was published.

The entire work biography of Lyudmila Gennadyevna is closely intertwined with active social activities. She was a member of the city committee of the Komsomol of Minsk and the Board of the Belarusian Aesthetic Association, a representative of the House of Representatives for the Leninsky District Council of Minsk, secretary of the party organization of the library, chairman of the Library Council of the Belarusian Cultural Foundation, Vice-president of the Belarusian Library Association. At one time, L.G. Kiryukhina was the head of the program "Integration in the book exchange and Acquisition industry" of the Professional Bureau of the Library аAssembly of Eurasia, was a member of the Republican Interdepartmental Library Council under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, and others.

Many years Lyudmila Gennadyevna made every effort to form a system of professional publications on librarianship in the republic. From 1998 to 2006, she was the editor-in-chief and compiler of the ongoing scientific collection "Zdabytki: dokumentalnyya pomniki na Belarusi" [Achievements: documentary monuments of Belarus]. She was directly involved in the founding of the first Belarusian professional journal "Bibliyatechny Svet" [A library light] in 1996, of which she has been the editor-in-chief for more than 20 years. In 2009, L.G. Kiryukhina initiated the creation of another professional publication – the annual scientific and practical peer-reviewed collection of articles "Bibliyatechny vesnik" [A library messenger]. As its editor-in-chief, she provides high-quality content for each issue.

Lyudmila G. is the author of more than 500 scientific publications on topical issues of the development of the library industry in the country, editor and compiler of a number of professional publications.

L.G. Kiryukhina's high professionalism has been awarded numerous awards. She is the holder of the honorary title "Honored Worker of Culture of the Republic of Belarus", the medal "For Labor Merits" and a large number of honorary certificates from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the National Library of Belarus, the Belarusian Culture Fund.

According to the results of the professional skills competition, she was awarded the title "Best by Profession" in the nomination "For her contribution to the development of librarianship" in 2016.

Today Lyudmila Gennadyevna works as the editor-in-chief in the editorial office of periodicals and continuing publications of the publishing department, inspiring and motivating everyone with her example of professional skill and active life position.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
