The international exhibition “The Peoples of the World and Their Primers” was open in the National Library of Belarus on April 26th.

This unique exhibition was opened in the framework of 14th Bibliological Conference, which is held these days in the library under the sign of the 400th anniversary of the first Slavic alphabet book "Bukvar".

Roman Motulsky, Director of the National Library opened the evening. Natalia Schasnovich, Secretary of the National Commission for UNESCO of the Republic of Belarus welcomed the audience.

The event was also attended by special guests: Virsis Martinsh, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Belarus; Andrey Sokirko, Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Bank for Reconstruction and Development "Belinvestbank"; and Anastasia Sorokina, representative of the Delegation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in the Republic of Belarus.

The opening of the main symbol of these anniversary events, the two-meter dimensional "Primer" art object became the most solemn moment of the evening. The decoration styling an ancient book symbolized the weight and value of the unique edition, which is on base of culture and is at the beginning of the way of acquisition of knowledge. This huge "Primer" will be exposed in the atrium of the 2nd floor, reminding readers and visitors of the library the 400th anniversary of the first published book, titled “Bukvar”.

The guests could see the performances by the exemplary dance ensemble "Vesyalushka" from the choreographic school № 1 in Minsk under the direction of Stanislav Dorokhin and the vocal duo by Anastasia and Polina Shkyalonak from the Kolodischy culture house.

After the opening ceremony, guests visited the Book museum to discover the exposition that brings together diverse and unique variations of the very first book for learning to read and write from different nations. Totally there are about 1,400 ABC-books in 587 languages ​​from the private collection of Juris Cibuļs, the Latvian teacher, author of primers and books about world nations. The collector told to guests some interesting facts about his collection.

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
