A series of events dedicated to the anniversary of the Vitebsk Regional Library were held on October 24–25.
On the first day, the main book depository of Vitebsk region hosted the international scientific and practical conference "The History of the Library as part of the History of the Native Land."
Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky presented a report on “The national and the regional: potential for preserving and promoting historical and cultural heritage of the region,” emphasizing that cooperation between national and regional libraries had great prospects.
At the end of the conference, the attendees were invited to the opening of the Department of Local History after its moving and reconstruction.
The first day ended with a concert at the Vitebsk Regional Palace of Children and Youth.
On October 25th, a problem-oriented round table "Libraries in the Information Society: the Urgent Issues and Activities" was held.
The meeting was chaired by representatives of the National Library.
Marina Pshybytko, head of the Library Science Research Department, presented a report about a new online resource, “The Libraries in Belarus” (in Russian: Беларусь библиотечная).
Lyudmila Kiryukhina, the editor-in-chief, spoke about self-education as the main condition for the development of professional competencies of librarians, introducing participants to the publications of the National Library.
At the end of the round table, the representative of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, Sergey Botyan, and the director of the National Library of Belarus, Roman Motulsky, answered the questions of the audience and considered improvement opportunities for libraries.
The attendees also visited the opening of the exhibition "Berlin Myths" by Reinhard Kleist and took an excursion to the Vitebsk Regional Library and the Museum of History of the Vitebsk Folk Art School.
