On April 27, a seminar on genealogy was held at the library. The event took place on the initiative of the Bibliology Research Department of the National Library of Belarus in cooperation with specialists from the National Historical Archive of Belarus.
The workshop program included presentations from genealogy experts who touched on an interesting area of research related to first names, nicknames and surnames.
The event was moderated by Alexander Susha, PhD in Culturology, Deputy Director General of the National Library of Belarus, who recalled the great interest of society in the history of its own genealogy and its roots, which makes genealogical research very popular and relevant. The speaker outlined a number of institutions in the world and in Belarus that are studying this issue. Alexander Aleksandrovich thanked the co-organizers of the seminar and expressed confidence that scientific events in genealogy would continue.
Vadim Vrublevsky, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Head of the Sector of Exhibition Activities, Thematic and Genealogical Research of the Department for the Use of Documents and Information of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, made a report “Formation of peasant surnames in Minsk, Mogilev and Vitebsk provinces during the Russian Empire”.
Denis Liseichikov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Deputy Director of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, made a report "Is it possible to determine the confessional affiliation by name?: Names-" markers "in historical sources".
Alyona Lyubaya, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Belarus of the Republican Institute of Higher Education made a report “Tatar onomastics: the specifics of genealogical research”.
The report “Jewish names and surnames in archival sources of the 1920s - 1930s. (on the example of Vitebsk region)" by Konstantin Karpekin, candidate of historical sciences, chief custodian of the funds of the State Archives of the Vitebsk region.
Natalia Garkovich, Candidate of Historical Sciences, made a presentation "The names of Orthodox priests in the Belarusian provinces according to the Minsk and Lithuanian diocesan records - what do the sources say?" .
Elena Korovchenko, coordinator of the volunteer group for indexing genealogical sources of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, made a report “What was the name of the ancestor ?: “traps” for a genealogist”.
At the end of the seminar, the results were summed up, answers to questions were given.
