On January, 29th, the National Library hosted the presentation of the Francysk Skaryna in the Languages of the World released by the Publishing House “Zvyazda”.

The book appeared in 2014 with funding from the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus. This is the first edition presenting Francysk Skaryna’s foreword to the Book of Judith translated into 64 languages: Russian, English, Bulgarian, Italian, Chinese, Polish, French, Japanese and others. The book is richly illustrated: pages are decorated with Francysk Skaryna’s engravings, and at the end of the book there are images of title pages of Skaryna’s editions.

Speaking at the event director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky said that the edition, though small in volume, had a very significant contents. Director congratulated the publishing house on the edition of this fine book and reminded of Francysk Skaryna’s contribution to the world history.

”The book has been compiled during almost five years to become a major event in the activity of the Publishing House “Zvyazda”, – Elena Stelmakh, deputy director of the publishing house said. – The role of Skaryna in the development of civilization is a very special theme, therefore this day is a celebration for the authors of the book!"

At the presentation many hearty words were address to publishers, translators and, certainly, the Belarusian first printer. Everyone agreed: translations of the foreword are ways to comprehension of Skaryna’s words stated by soul and heart almost five centuries ago.

Reading out of the first printer’s foreword in different languages: Ukranian, Serbian, English, Kazakh, and Chinese became an apogee of the event. Translations were read by representatives of embassies, a journalist and a university professor. The performance of a representative of the Moldavian diaspora became the most unusual. He emphasized that there was no Moldavian version of Skaryna’s words in the book, and therefore he prepared it for visitors having made the 65th translation of the known text.

Also guests of the event enjoyed dance performances of students of Minsk Choreographic School of Arts № 1 under the direction of Stanislav Dorokhin.
