Within the framework of the project "On a Visit to the Books", the National Library offers a series of classes "Lessons in the museum." They are designed for pupils in grades 1–5.


"Lessons at the Museum" are the classes that are hold not in the familiar school surroundings, but in the Book Museum. The classes are based on the collections of the National Library and the museum exposition, to learn more about the subject. Textbooks and notebooks are replaced by real exhibits, interesting layouts and exciting books. And this is not just a trip, but namely lessons on the topics from the curriculum, prepared by professional museum staff. Children will gain knowledge in school subjects, together with new experiences and the opportunity to show their creativity.

TOPICS OF LESSONS

Hand-written books of Belarus
At the classes children will "go" on travels to the mysterious world of ancient manuscripts and learn about the rich hand-written book culture of Belarus. Young visitors will learn about the origins, forms, materials, decoration and the repertoire of manuscripts. And most importantly, they will be able to see the originals in the museum exhibition, as well as browse and read the facsimile editions of manuscripts. The classes include creative tasks.

Francysk Skaryna, the Belarusian first printer
The classes, which promote awareness of the role of Francysk Skaryna in the development of national culture, are a fascinating story with interactive elements on the preconditions of the Belarusian book printing, the life and work of the first Belarusian printer. Pupils will have a unique opportunity to see the books published by Skaryna in Prague nearly 500 years ago. In Belarus, the National Library is the only keeper of the original books by the prominent educator. The classes include creative tasks.

The National Library of Belarus, the symbol of a modern capital city
The library is primarily a house where books live. During the classes children will become familiar with the structure of the largest library of the country and learn how the book life is organized in there. Particular attention will be paid to the Book Museum, where the original book monuments are exhibited. Visitors will get acquainted with the "longevity" of book culture, some of which are already more than 500 years. The classes include creative tasks.

The castle culture of Belarus
The classes focus on the history of castles and castle libraries of Belarus. Pupils will learn and consolidate their knowledge of castle architecture on the territory of Belarus, consider the types of castles and their design features, and hear about castle libraries and theaters. Young museum visitors will have a unique opportunity to see the old printed editions from the Radziwill’s private collection, bookplates and superexlibrises on the books from the eminent castle library. Also pupils will see the only in Belarus copy of the XVIII century book of dramatic works by Ursula Radziwill Comedies and tragedies with engravings by M. Žukoǔski, based on the Princess’ sketches of the Nesvizh theatrical space. Participants of the "lessons in the museum" will perform challenging tasks and play a mock-improvisation.

Multireligious Belarus
The classes are devoted to the beliefs and religious traditions of the Belarusian multifaith culture. Initially, children will watch a presentation and listen to a lecture-discussion on the pagan worldview, the spread of Christianity in the Belarusian lands, the coexistence of different religions, which was the historical foundation of the Belarusian national tradition of tolerance, as well as the existence of a multi-confessional state. Special attention will be paid to religious books. After the lecture children will be able to see the museum exposition and identify book monuments belonging to different confessional traditions. Also they will be offered to play museum workers and talk about the religious books on display. The classes include creative tasks.

Francišak Bahuševič, the defender of peasants and the Belarusian language
Francišak Bahuševič is a prominent figure in the history of Belarusian literature of the XIX century. During the “lesson in the museum” children will deepen their knowledge of the biography and work of the writer. At the classes the theme of people’s life will be revealed, which is the core of the artistic heritage of the founder of new Belarusian literature. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the famous collections Dudka bielaruskaja and Smyk bielaruski published in the early ХХ century. children will read fragments from the writer’s works in which Francišak Bahuševič told about the rich history and culture of Belarusians, substantiating the right of the Belarusian people to the development of the mother language. The classes include creative tasks.

Yaǔchim Karski and his library
Yaǔchim Karski is the founder of Belarusian scientific linguistics and literary studies. Some researchers call him the Belarusian Columbus. At the classes children will become familiar with the biography of the scientist, as well as his most important work The Belarusians. Visitors will be able to see the books of the famous linguist-Slavonic scholar from the library’s collections. The National Library’s fund contains the unique Yaǔchim Karski’s private collection of books, which served at the time the scientist’s creative laboratory. The classes include creative tasks.

Training topics will be expanded.

We invite schoolchildren, along with teachers and parents, to attend classes in the Book Museum. Sure, children will enjoy these studies which not only make a variety of school life, but also awaken interest to advanced topics.

Adam Shanyavsky and the library fund of the Nesvizh county school (the last quarter of the XVIII century)

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
