A lecture-concert entitled "Play me a pipe, and I'll dance" from the cycle "National Musical Heritage of Belarus" was presented on 26 January at the Labyrinth Gallery.
The Choral Chapel's director, Galina Tsmyg, discussed the national song customs of Belarus and the significant effort done by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus' Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language, and Literature to preserve and advance the national musical heritage.
The performers showcased folk song samples and adaptations of folk songs made by renowned Belarusian composer Elena Atrashkevich.
The audience also had an incredible time listening to the duda, zhaleika, ocarina, gusli, and hurdy-gurdy, which are Belarusian national instruments. Ekaterina Radzivilova, a Center member, discussed their construction, sound extraction methods, and application in folk tradition.
The audience had the opportunity to participate in some of the artists' great performances, learn the Belarusian dance "Matliot", and perform some of their own creations.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the next event, "I have got the legacy from the ancestors", which will feature music by Belarusian composers based on lyrics by national poets. The meeting will be held on February 23, 2023, at 6.30 p.m..
