A workshop on “Kitabi: the Unique Manuscripts and Monuments of Literacy” will start on November 27.
In the workshop, consisting of some classes, you will learn what Kitabi are and how to read them.
Kitabi are hand-written books that had been created over the centuries by Belarusian Tatars. These manuscripts, written in Arabic script, contain texts in Arabic, some Turkish, as well as the Belarusian and Polish languages. Religious and didactic works, entertaining stories and descriptions of rituals, divination and astrological texts reveal the spiritual world and culture of Belarusian Tatars.
Kitabi are an object of study for historians, philologists, religion scholars, cultural historians, bibliographers, anthropologists and ethnographers.
The event moderator, Irina Synkova, is PhD and Associate Professor at the International Relations School.
